All the negative reviews I’ve been reading have left me puzzled. Is there some reason why all movies with famous actors should be hard-core and filled with violence and profanity?? This movie is a FAMILY film. The kids will love it, Mom and Dad will love it, too. I applaud Vin Diesel and the other performers for doing a top-notch Disney film for the FAMILY! Disney films are classically just that….films for the family. Mom, Dad, the kids, even Grandma and Grandpa (and any other number of relatives) can watch this movie together and all have a great time doing so. There was a time when this type of film was the norm, not the exception. What has happened in this country? This film is great and should be seen by all and bought for future enjoyment when made available on DVD and VHS.
Vin Diesel had a choice when “Pacifier” was offered to him. He could star in this low-budget release or return for “XXX State of the Union.” Mr. Diesel opted to do “Pacifier” because he’d have the opportunity to make a film that his children could watch and enjoy with him–unlike his previous releases which he considered too violent.

Surprise, “Pacifier” isn’t just for kids. While there is a “family feel” to the film, there’s enough action and suspense to keep the adults on the edge of their seats. Besides, the whole film is surprisingly funny as well.
Vin Diesel stars as a Special Ops soldier who lost a famous scientist on a mission. When he’s assigned to guard the scientists’ children while their mother is away, Diesel is triply determined to make sure the kids are safe. The children pose their own problems: the son dresses as a Nazi (turns out he’s secretly gotten a part in “Sound of Music”), the daughter is having problems learning to drive, the baby just really doesn’t know what’s happening. Everyone’s traumatized by the loss of their father–and having such a rough-and-ready guardian is hard on all of them. But, they band together when the family’s at risk.

Overall, an excellent film with a lot of good messages for children. Plus, a lot of laughs. Kudos to Vin Diesel. This little-known film actually shows a lot of depth in his ability to act that we have not seen before.

The one Halloween sequl in which He doesn’t come home, Halloween III: Season of the Witch was producer John Carpenter’s attempt to get the series away from the original’s psycho-on-the-loose story line and turn it into a vehicle for more far-fetched Halloween-themed horror tales. Incredibly, the fans voted for more of the same and Carpenter walked away for others to rehash the Michael Myers plot line in a succession of look-alike movies that are still turning up every few years.
After the mysterious death of a toyshop owner, a doctor (Tom Atkins) and the man’s daughter (Stacy Nelkin) investigate the Irish-dominated Northern California community of Santa Mira, a company town owned by the Silver Shamrock Novelty corporation. Atkins and Nelkin are typical low-rent horror movie protagonists, dim bulbs who discover an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style conspiracy involving sharp-suited corporate robots. But gust star Dan O’Herlihy steals the film as a Celtic joke tycoon who hates the way American kids are despoiling the religious spirit of Samhain and decides to teach them a nasty lesson. His scheme, which involves a stolen Stonehenge megalith and a techno-magic spell that turns the heads of TV watchers into writhing masses of snakes and insects, is valu for money, and O’Herlihy mixes enough serious malice into the charm to come across as a great screen bad guy. –Kim Newman

“When you look at me, what do you see?” pontificates football star Joe Kingman, then provides the answer: “Greatness.” Well, clearly an ego like that needs to be brought down to size–pint-size. The winning family comedy The Game Plan has a whole lot going for it, including star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who’s a natural comedic actor (and the camera loves him), and the young actress (Madison Pettis) who plays the daughter he didn’t know he had, Peyton. The plot doesn’t break much new ground, since many films have mined the territory of the self-indulgent child-adult who suddenly “inherits” a child (from Three Men and a Baby to Baby Boom to Big Daddy to Raising Helen). But thanks to the charismatic performance of Johnson, the film is winsome and uplifting. Johnson’s comic timing and straight-man face are spot-on, as is his warm chemistry with the sweet-faced Pettis. Also giving notable performances are the lovely Roselyn Sanchez as Peyton’s ballet teacher, and Kyra Sedgwick as Kingman’s hard-nosed agent who’s aghast at the appearance of an out-of-wedlock child. Children and adults both can enjoy the movie’s warm-and-fuzzy moral of making family where you find it–or where it finds you. –A.T. Hurley

Instead of the usual showers and locker room scenes, director Junji Nishimura offers outrageous chase sequnces involving patrol cars, motorcycles, boats, and helicopters. Miyuki and Natsumi save the day, but the fast-paced action can’t quite cover the gaping holes in the plot. The terrorists are thwarted, but never identified, and no one explains how attacking a small Tokyo police station is tied to sabotaging global financial institutions. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he’s sure that “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons and Dragons Adventure is not a film sequl to Dungeons and Dragons (2000), but the DVD equivalent of an interactive role-playing novel. There are over 900 short digitally animated sequnces, leading every so often to a choice to be made with the remote control, resulting after about 90 minutes in one of four possible endings. Just as the original D&D was inspired by The Lord of the Rings, the scenarios here are Tolkien rehashed: a newly arisen darkness is seeking an ancient ultimate weapon, against which stand a human warrior, Regdar; a halfling, Lidda; and an elven wizard, Mialee. The CGI is closer to Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles than the pseudo-realism of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the electronic score is tiresome and the contemporary voice acting, using such expressions as “heads up” and ” or something,” is laughable.
What of the interactive element? Essentially it offers two equally uninteresting paths at the end of every major scene–uninteresting because it’s impossible to care what happens to the marionette-like stereotypes no matter what they do. While the adventure does offer plenty of well-choreographed cartoon-style action, interacting with Scourge of Worlds is ultimately about as much fun as watching someone else play a computer game–and that’s just the first time through. –Gary S. Ever since the Comedy Central series Strangers with Candy first aired, Jerri Blank has seemed fated for humiliation, disease, and a boxed set–here, her ultimate destiny is finally fulfilled.
In creating Jerri, the 46-year-old high school freshman, Amy Sedaris and her co-stars/co-writers Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert imagined a person who is both startlingly crass and strangely innocent. One minute Jerri is uttering the immortal line “I like the pole and the hole”–the next she’s only interested in “pizza, pizza, pizza,” and joining the cheerleading squad. Her world view is completely unaffected by her 32 years as a “junkie whore.” It won’t take a rabid SWC fan–just a lover of wicked satire–to appreciate this trapper-keeper-shaped package and the After School Special-based stories inside. Some of the bonus features, including an interview with the stars at the Museum of Television & Radio, will be familiar to folks who have previous, single-season DVDs. However, certain new additions, such as “The Trip Back” PSA, which stars a real-life Jerri clone, make this set a worth-owning item. Other highlights include deleted scenes–one of which features an inspirational meeting between Jerri and Buddha Stalin, Flatpoint’s most controversial rock star. A clever film strip by closeted lovers Chuck Noblet and Geoffrey Jellineck on their “research trip” to Mexico also draws chuckles. Over 30 episodes, the jokes do become a touch repetitive, but the series never loses its energy or sharp wit. If you’re looking for a show that will teach you how to do the wrong things the right way, the Strangers with Candy boxed set has the lesson plan for you. –Leah Weathersby
